heartbeat biometrics for human authentication

Advancing the credit card industry

Biometric Technology

Fingerprint-based authorizations are vulnerable low-tech spoofing (using an artificial finger to unlock a smartphone). Every object we touch leaves behind our fingerprints which can be stolen by an identity thief the same way passwords can be stolen. HPAuth is a technology invented and patented by M.I.S Electronics that combines fingerprint technology with the biometric signatures of your heartbeat and skin. Your unique heartbeat authorizes financial transactions and makes Multifactor authentication (MFA) easy. Your fingerprint is everywhere. But your heartbeat is in you.

What is HPAuth?

HPAuth is poised to surpass other early-test authentication technologies as the leader in next-level security and privacy solutions. Key verticals for the smart card market include: financial, security, government, consumer, and automotive.

H (heart) + P (pulmonary) + Auth (authorization)

HP Auth is a trademark of MIS for the technology that combines fingerprint authorization with Enhanced PPG technology as described in US Patent 10, 076, 920

Enhanced PPG (E-PPG)

E-PPG is a trademark of MIS for the technology that optically senses a unique cardiac/pulmonary signature and the subcutaneous/dermal spectral profile of an individual—seamlessly integrated into a fingerprint sensor. The technology also implements adaptive reference algorithm to compensate for drift caused by physiological changes. The same sensors are used to detect spoof attacks.

Prototype

MIS is in the Process of developing a non-functioning prototype whose sole purpose is to give a sense of commitment and history.

This card prototype will demonstrate how a credit card transaction can be authorized using HPAuth.  A functioning credit card with tap and pay (Visa payWave™, MasterCard Tap & Go™ and Interac Flash™) will be used to interact with a payment terminal via NFC.  The card will be physically but not electrically mated with a circuit that holds the fingerprint sensor, Enhanced PGG sensor, and a microcontroller.

For prototype purposes the circuit board will have an NFC jammer which will be deactivated when the verification process passes.  Essentially it will provide the same functional requirement.

An existing commercial fingerprint device will be repurposed for the fingerprint sensor & logic of the prototype. Seeing that these devices have a simple binary output (usually a motor or a solenoid), this output can be sensed by the microcontroller.

The circuit board will have 3 LED’s to indicate positive verification,  One yellow LED will indicate positive fingerprint authentication, the second yellow LED will indicate a positive Enhanced PPG authentication.  The third green LED will indicate that the transaction is authorized. Similar to the LED’s a piezoelectric speaker will produce the corresponding sounds.

FOB

This commerical FOB prototype is the equivalent to the card prototype. The pushbutton on the fob will be functionally replaced by a relay that is activated when both fingerprint and Enhanced PPG are authenticated.

Advantages of HP Auth

  • Fingerprint technology alone is not secure (easily defeated).
  • Fingerprint PIN or Password
  • HPAuth™: ties the biometrics to the dynamics of your heart instead of static data
  • Two factor authentication (2FA): closes the loophole in security
  • Privacy: Biometric data never leaves the card and cannot be read
  • Enhanced PPG®: Anti-spoofing makes fraud virtually impossible
